I've just read Kiln People by David Brin. Very fun and enjoyable. It evokes the Golem story from Jewish fiction(?) - a precursor to Frankenstein. Brin wrote the Postman (the good book, not the lame movie version) as well as Earth and several other enjoyable novels you can find via Brin's site.
Contrast it with Report from Ground Zero, the other one I'm reading. Rough, in your face fact as opposed to fun prose, above. Ouch. Tough reading, realizing that I know many of the names and families personally.
